To ensure the success of each and every student, the course is completed in levels.
Successful completion of each level is required to continue to the next, ensuring that ONLY the students who are ready for the work will complete the full training program.
It also allows people to test-drive the program without making the full investment.
Over the course of four levels, students proofread 50 practice jobs of varying difficulty and topics (medical included) — all together, there are 3,120 practice pages.
Quizzes and exams follow each level to qualify you for the next step.
To ensure the success of each and every student, the course is completed in levels.

The Nuts and Bolts of Transcripts
In Level 2, you spend a full 30 days studying both Modules 1 and 2.
In Module 2, you'll learn to recognize the vast array of possible errors that can occur in transcripts; become familiar with the vocabulary found in multiple types of proceedings; become well versed in transcript-specific punctuation; understand general formatting rules in regard to BY: lines, colloquy, Q&A, marking exhibits, and use of parentheticals; and fully differentiate between uses of American English spelling/punctuation and British English spelling/punctuation within transcripts.

You'll know exactly where your strengths and weaknesses are, which will give you a major advantage if you choose to move on to the rest of the course.
At the end of Jumpstart, you’ll complete a skillfully designed 100-question Word Skills Test to confirm your skills. After the test, you’ll receive a full-length, 25-page printable PDF of your test results plus clear explanations for the correct answer for each of the 100 questions.
If you score an 80% or higher, you’re ready to move on to Level 3.
Level 3: NextSteps
Marking Up Transcripts and Practice
In Level 3, you’re given 60 days to learn how to mark up transcripts. First, you’ll learn four methods to properly correct transcripts: hard copy, errata, on a computer, and digitally (paperless) using iOS technology. Then you’ll get to actually mark up transcripts -- lots of them. You’ll practice at various levels of difficulty for good measure. Need to review something? Don’t worry! You still have access to Modules 1 and 2 so you can go back and forth as needed.
Modules 3, 4, and 5
- Includes 3,120 pages in 50 practice transcripts.
- Exhaustive proofreading checklist
- Research strategies for proper spelling of people, things, and places within transcripts using a provided notice and other resources, online or otherwise
Upon completion of Level 3, you’ll take the Module 5 Quiz -- a manually graded, timed punctuation and transcript test -- before proceeding to Level 4.
Students who require more than 60 days to complete Level 3 may invest in Level 4 to obtain lifetime access.
A 100% score on the Module 5 Quiz is required to continue.
Level 4: Launch & Earn
Corresponding Within the Court Reporting Profession + Marketing Your Business
In Modules 6 and 7, you’ll dive into the business building foundations for preparing to work with court reporters. At this level, you’re given lifetime access to all modules, and upon successful completion of the final exam, you’ll unlock Modules 8-9 and apply for your certificate.
Modules 6 and 7: Business Correspondence & Procedures
- Learn to communicate effectively, promptly, and professionally with court reporters and agencies regarding issues such as turnaround time (regular and rush)

How long do I have access to the course material?
For full course students, you have LIFETIME access to course material (including all future updates) and membership in student forum and private Facebook group.
Why is the course broken up into so many pieces?
We break up the course into smaller pieces because this prevents overwhelm and increases the likelihood you'll be successful.
How difficult is the exam?
IF you take your time and practice the way you should, passing the exam will be easy for you. However, if you rush through the exam, or you are not able to spot errors the way you might think, you risk failing it. Therefore, it is highly recommended to enroll with the expectation you may spend longer than 2-4 months to become the proofreader you need to be — the one that can not only get clients, but KEEP them.
Why not just take your money and run? What's in it for us?
Well, because if you don't succeed, we don't succeed. If you invest your money to enroll in the intensive course and then give up because it's too hard (and yes, it is hard), that's no good for either of us. It's frustrating for you to work on a course not suited for your skills, and it's frustrating for us to teach students who are not well-suited for our course.
How long does it take to find proofreading work after finishing the course?
One of our MOST frequently asked questions deals with how long it takes students to find proofreading work after finishing the proofreading course. I’ll let my students handle this one. Make sure you read our student success stories placed throughout this site — one of the questions we ask ALL our students we interview is “How long did it take you to get your first client?” — you’ll find those to be valuable answers to this question as well.
Will completing your proofreading course make me a certified proofreader?
NO. Students who pass the course Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice™ with a score of 90% or better receive a Certificate of Completion. It is NOT a certification program and it will not make you a certified proofreader. In fact, there is currently no such thing as a transcript proofreading certification program, and therefore no such thing as a certified transcript proofreader.
I’m a mom. How flexible are proofreading jobs?
Of course, the folks on the ProofreadAnywhere team believe freelance proofreading is a dream job for people with a pair of eagle eyes! It’s the new way to work! It offers the flexibility to manage your own schedule. It also offers you the unique opportunity to make money doing something you enjoy, from anywhere in the world. You can choose how much work you do, and how much money you make. The sky’s the limit!
I’m not sure about grammar. How do I know if the proofreading course is a good fit for me?
It may surprise you to learn that proofreading for court reporters is less focused on grammar and more focused on punctuation, for starters, but the main concerns are actually not grammar related at all. Our beginner Basecamp at Level I gives you the chance to try out the course without a large upfront investment so you can be sure before moving on!
Does the course help me find proofreading work?
Yes. But we don’t tell you how to find clients and proofreading work until you’ve mastered the actual skill, first. Many people are afraid of not being able to find clients. At PA, we believe mastering the skill should always come first, which is why we require students to complete all of the practice transcripts plus a checkpoint quiz before even being able to access the finding clients module in the course. The reasoning for this is simple: if you do not know what you’re doing before going off to find proofreading work, you will only be setting yourself up for failure.
What percentage of your students are successful?
I get this question ALL the time! People want to gauge their own likelihood for success based on others’ success. First, don’t do that. YOU are 100% responsible for your own success, and comparing yourself to someone else is the worst thing you can do. Just like I can’t promise you you’ll be one of my success stories, you can’t base your likelihood for failure on some numbers that have nothing to do with you, your ability, and your drive to succeed. How do I know if this course is going to work for me?
We're confident that by the end of Module 1, you'll know it is -- this is why Beginner Basecamp lets you "in" without a big upfront investment.
As a Beginner Basecamp student, how long do I have to go through the material?
You will have 7 days of access to Module 1 (the first 7 of 55 course units). You'll be able to see the entire course outline from the progress screen so you know what's ahead!
Can I skip Beginner Basecamp and go directly into Jumpstart?
No, Basecamp is required before Jumpstart. Starting with Basecamp gives you a bonus! It includes three eBooks while also giving you a discount toward your Jumpstart upgrade. No point in paying more to skip a level and get less!
Why is the full course broken out into pieces?
We don't ask anyone to pay for the full course tuition all at once. We want everyone to be extra, super-duper sure they want to do this before they invest in the full course. That way, if you don't like it, you haven't invested in the entire course. You can safely turn back, and you will still have learned a lot.
How is the course content delivered?
The units contain a variety of worksheets, handouts, videos, screencast tutorials, and text to aid in the learning process. All videos produced by PA include verbatim transcripts for students unable to listen to audio.
Is there a LIVE component to the course?
Yes! You get lifetime membership in our exclusive students-only Facebook group, PA Proofreaders -- one of the most active, supportive and powerful groups you'll ever experience.
What kind of equipment and materials do I need to complete Jumpstart?
You will need a computer or tablet with internet access, and an iPad with iAnnotate is highly recommended but not required.

What if I don't have legal experience?
Not to worry. That's what these foundational modules are for -- to help you fill in the gaps.
How long do I have access to Jumpstart?
You have 30 days of access.
Do I lose my progress if I let my access expire?
No. As soon as you upgrade to the next level, you'll regain access to your content and your progress.
Why do you limit access to Jumpstart to 30 days?
To encourage commitment. Thirty days is more than enough time to complete Jumpstart. In the unlikely event you find it is not enough, then it's likely you do not have time to fit in any new commitments right now.
Do I have to upgrade immediately or before my 30 days are up?
No. You can redeem your Jumpstart for credit toward the next step at any time, even after your 30-Day Jumpstart expires. You will not lose your progress.
How many questions are in the test?
There are 100 skillfully designed questions in the Word Skills Test that are meant to confirm your skills. This is the KEY PART of Jumpstart.
Why do we have to take a test to get to the next level?
Here's the hard truth: A lot of folks who say they can spot errors can't actually spot errors. That's what the Word Skills Test at the end of Jumpstart is for. Jumpstart is a gatekeeper. The Word Skills Test provides a clear picture of your word-skill level before you commit to our intensive course. If, after the foundational modules and lessons, you are unable to pass the Word Skills Test with at least an 80% or above, it's a good sign you should not move on with the course. Successful completion of Modules 1-2 combined with a good score on the Word Skills Test are reliable indicators of your potential to do well in the rest of the course.
What kinds of questions are on the word skills test?
It is a multiple-choice test with 100 questions on general punctuation (use of commas, apostrophes, hyphens, etc.), and correct word use (affect vs. effect, ensure vs. insure, etc.). There are no "trick" questions, and while the test isn't easy, it's not hard, either. We also do not test you on grammar or sentence structure because the type of proofreading we teach in the intensive course is of the spoken word. Proofreading the spoken word does not involve fixing grammar or sentence structure as would proofreading an essay and is thus not the focus of the skills test.
How will I prepare to take the test?
In addition to the core course curriculum, you will receive:
- 10 worksheet + answer key combos to go along with the Module 2 lessons, plus several quizzes to test your understanding
- The Look Better in Writing™ Handbook to Commonly Misused Words: Is it "principal" or "principle"? Our 57-page, clickable, searchable, and alphabetized guide includes 166 words/terms commonly misused and abused in text. It's designed to help you choose and use the correct word -- every time.

How long do I have to take the test?
You have 70 minutes to take the test.
How will I receive my test results?
You will receive a full-length, 25-page printable PDF of your test results plus clear explanations for the correct answer for each of the 100 questions. You'll know exactly where your strengths and weaknesses are, which will give you a major advantage if you choose to move on to the rest of the course.
Does a passing score on the Word Skills Test guarantee my success as a proofreader?
No, silly! It's not magic. Only you can guarantee your success with the action you take with your skills. If you go on to the full course after completing Jumpstart, then you don't take action to do well and build your business, nothing will happen.
What if I don't score 80% or above on the Word Skills Test? Does that mean I can never be a proofreader?
Not necessarily, but it does mean if you do choose to pursue proofreading, you'll need to work harder to fill in the gaps than someone who scored higher on the test. You will need to bolster your foundational knowledge first -- we'll recommend an appropriate next step to do so when you receive your results.
If I do well in the 30-Day Jumpstart, am I obligated to enroll in the intensive course?
Not at all. Jumpstart™ is the step you take before committing to the full course. There's absolutely no obligation to continue following Jumpstart, and there is no pressure. The choice is all yours.
What if I don't do well on the test? Can I get a refund?
No. We've worked very hard to put together the materials included in the 30-Day Jumpstart, and the material presented is valuable to anyone regardless of whether you decide to pursue proofreading or not. Word skills, especially, are always in demand. Therefore, our standard refund policy applies.
How many times can I take the test?
Just once. This is how we keep it honest. Think about it: if we gave you unlimited attempts at the same test along with access to the answers in between attempts, that doesn't help you determine if you're a good fit for proofreading. If you'd still like to retake the test after completing the full course (for your own edification), contact us. We can reset the exam for a fee of $25.
